How it works
Taking the First Step
Reaching out for support can feel like a big step, especially when you're worried about your child. At The Therapeutic Rainbow, my aim is to make the process as straightforward, supportive and reassuring as possible.
Every child is unique, which is why therapy is tailored to their individual needs. From your first enquiry through to the final session, you'll be supported every step of the way.
Next steps
Step 1
Get in Touch
It all begins with an informal conversation.
Whether you contact me by phone, email or through the website, we'll arrange a convenient time to talk about your concerns and explore whether play therapy is the right support for your child.
This is an opportunity for you to ask questions, share your child's experiences and find out more about how therapy works.
Step 2
Initial Parent Consultation
Before meeting your child, I spend time getting to know you and your family's story.
During this consultation we'll discuss:
-
Your child's strengths and interests
-
Current concerns and challenges
-
Significant life events
-
Family relationships
-
School experiences
-
Any previous support received
-
Your hopes for therapy
This helps build a full picture of your child's world and ensures therapy is tailored to their needs.
Step 3
Assessment
Your child will attend assessment sessions where they can begin to explore the therapeutic playroom at their own pace.
Children communicate through play in many different ways. Some may talk openly, while others express themselves through creative play, art, sand, stories, role play or games.
There is no pressure to talk. Play is your child's natural language, and therapy provides a safe, accepting space where they can begin to make sense of their experiences.
Step 4 – Beginning Therapy
Following the assessment, we'll agree together whether ongoing play therapy would be beneficial.
Sessions usually take place weekly at the same time each week to provide consistency and security.
Within the therapeutic relationship, children are supported to:
-
Understand and express emotions
-
Build confidence and self-esteem
-
Develop emotional regulation
-
Process difficult experiences or trauma
-
Strengthen resilience
-
Improve relationships with others
-
Discover healthier ways of coping
Every child's journey is different, and therapy progresses at their own pace.
Step 5 –
Regular Reviews
Throughout therapy, we will meet regularly to review progress.
These review meetings provide an opportunity to discuss themes emerging in therapy, celebrate your child's achievements and consider any changes at home or school.
Your child's confidentiality is always respected while ensuring you remain supported throughout the therapeutic journey.
Where appropriate, I can also liaise with schools and other professionals involved in your child's care.
Step 6 –
Ending Therapy
Ending therapy is an important part of the process and is carefully planned.
Children are prepared for the ending over several sessions, allowing time to reflect on how far they have come, celebrate their progress and say goodbye in a safe and meaningful way.
Families are offered a final review to discuss progress and consider any recommendations for the future.
